Dog nail trimming

How Often Should You Trim Your Dog's Nails?

Most dog owners underestimate how quickly nails grow — and how much long nails affect a dog's health and comfort. Knowing when to trim is just as important as knowing how.

The General Rule

Most dogs need their nails trimmed every 3 to 4 weeks. Active dogs who walk frequently on hard surfaces like pavement may need it less often, while dogs who spend most time indoors or on soft surfaces will need more frequent trims.

Signs Your Dog's Nails Are Too Long

  • You can hear them clicking on hard floors when your dog walks
  • The nails are visibly curling or touching the ground when standing
  • Your dog is walking awkwardly or seems uncomfortable
  • The nails are starting to curve inward toward the paw pad

Why Regular Trims Matter

Overgrown nails force your dog's toes into an unnatural position, which over time affects their posture, walking stride, and joint health. In severe cases this can lead to pain and even permanent joint damage.

Making Trims Easier

The key to easy, consistent nail maintenance is using a quiet, low-vibration grinder rather than clippers. Your dog is far less likely to resist a trim that feels gentle and sounds quiet. Aim for a little and often — small amounts every few weeks rather than dramatic catches-up every few months.
